Professional DJ for over 30 years, champion of the UK jazzdance scene from the start to the present day, deep funk and soul connoisseur, afro-cuban and latin jazz expert, supporter of new music such as broken beat, CD compiler for a host of labels, columnist for Blues & Soul Magazine........if they called James Brown the hardest working man in show business, then Snowboy would definately be in second spot!

He has played across the world - funk clubs, jazz festivals, soul weekenders, latin nights.....he's has appeared at so many Southport Soul Weekenders they probably have a permanent caravan there for him, a little piece of Essex on the Lancashire coast! Band onstage 10.45pm.

DJ support from original Leeds jazz daddy/soul brother GIP DAMMONE (DIG! Family/The Cooker/Yardbird Suite/Gordon Ramsay's The F-Word), cooking up some soul/jazz/rhythm & blues beauties before the band, and then young left-field Brasilian beats/latin soul maestro DJ GIB (Brasilian Beats/Rumba Caracass/Havana Cultura) will be warming up for Snowboy after the band.

Spanish Harlem's Spring Bank Holiday Special - it's definately a big one and an essential night out for all those who love of soul, funk, jazz, fusion, latin, boogie and great live music! It's the 12th festival held at the venue but only my first visit. The intro of the 1/3 pint measure was a good idea, as after the first couple of pints it was a great way to sample far more and at a steady pace. The main room was filled with many friendly faces and the atmopshere was like a bunch of old friends meeting up over a pint.

I decided, too stick to my original plan and go for breweries near where my Mam's family was born, haha, so I started with a Lambton's cask from Double Maxim in Houghton-le-spring, a nice and easy going 3.7%, hoppy light ale and a good session one to ease you in to 4 hours of sampling! Next up I tried the Holden's Double Chocolate Stout as it's from East Coast brewery in Filey, an old family holiday destintation. The stout was rich and strong at 7.2% and was a bit of a shock to the taste buds. It felt like I was drinking a pint of marmite, so you'll either love this one or hate it. I think I prefer it on my toast rather than down the hatch.

On my theoretical journey I decided to come back in land to York brewery with a hefty Nordic Fury a love red malty and dry beer. Partly tried this one as I liked the Viking tie-in, York's been having a week long Viking festival around the same time and I imagined drinking this one on a re-constructed long boat and sailing down the the River Foss.

After the third pint my plan went out the window and I went for an Outstanding Pilsner from Bury at 5% as the hook line states how real lager should taste and it was a thirst quenching one that was a nice stop gap bewteen the beers. Feeling a little overwhelmed with the choice (over 100 real ales, bottled beers, ciders and wines) I asked one of the volunteers behind the bar to choose me a drink and he came thumbs up with a Winter Ale from Hopstar, Blackburn 4.2%, a nice light beer to bring me back down to earth smoothly.

Right now's my chance for the ciders; I had a dabble on the raffle on me ways (note to self never trust a man selling you a raffle ticket with a Garfield t-shirt on). BEST DRINK OF NIGHT! Well Top 5 at least Janet's Jungle Juice a CAMRA gold medal winner in 2007 at 6% from West Croft, Somerset, what a gorgeous amber nectar, sweet and more-ish. Got to try one based on name was the next thought and I went for Grafter's Wobble Gob, an appropriately named beer for me from the Gainsborough based brewery. 4.9% another handle with care, haha.

It was coming to the end of the night and my friend offered me their final tokens to use......Since at heart I'm a cider lover I went back into the main hall and decided to finish on Broadoak's Moonshine, a white and dangerously drinkable 7.5% medium sweet number. What an end to a great do...right when's the next one on!

One's I wanted to try but never got round to:
Crown - Cannonball Adderley 4.7% & Ring of Fire 7.7%
Hadrian & Border - Ginger Beer 4%
Moorview - Cocker Doodle Brew 5.2%
Saltaire - Hazelnut Coffee Porter 4.6%
Great Oakley - Wots Occuring 3.9%

Saltaire brewery - beer club - yes beer club!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 161px; height: 220px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_saEWcrubCKg/S2iL-tEG5-I/AAAAAAAAAPM/v8Cl1vAoHoE/s320/SB-amarillo-GOLDtiny2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433746859787479010" />
Made a visit to the end of month beer club and was very impressed!

www.saltairebrewery.co.uk

Next club End of March 26th - check website for more info. Joe Bataan has a career spanning 45 years which took him from the means streets of Harlem in the 1960s singing boogaloo and latin soul for Fania Records, to international superstardom in the mid-1970s with recordings for Salsoul Records, and then pioneering rap music in the late 1970s with his ground-breaking "Rap-O-Clap-O" track!

STILL recording today, he has a new CD on Vampi Soul Records (Spain), simply called King Of Latin Soul, and works live regularly with various bands, both in the USA and Europe. Since 2006, the relaunch of the iconic latin label Fania Records has seen all his classic 1960s and early 1970s albums re-issued, and his music has reached out to a whole new generation of listeners and dancers! Unbelievably, this is his FIRST trip to the UK ever!

One such new fan is his fellow collaborator on this tour, West Coast producer/DJ/musician James Pants, recording artist for the coolest label in hiphop and abstract beats, Stones Throw Records. James was discovered by Stones Throw label boss Peanut Butter Wolf and has been making some excellent eclectic recordings for them the last few years, showing his love of all things funky, from disco to latin boogie, deep techno to original hiphop and electro. He is a self-confessed massive Joe Bataan fan and jumped at the chance to work with him on this tour. James will be playing percussion and guitar/keys onstage with the singer as well as throwing down some tunes as post gig guest DJ.

Finally, backing Joe, his New York singer and timbalero plus James Pants, we have the UK's no.1 latin fusion band Grupo X. Featuring the best latin and jazz musicians in the country, the band have recorded two studio CDs for Loft Recordings which have won them a pretty impressive fanbase which includes Gilles Peterson, Louie Vega (Masters At Work), Bobbito Garcia, Rainer Truby, Osunlade, Jazzanova and of course, Joe Bataan. When he was booked for the UK, he insisted they back him. They have won the respect of many visiting latin musicians as the best and most reliable backing band in the country, a list which includes Jimmy Sabater (Joe Cuba's singer/timbalero), Frankie Morales (Tito Puente's singer), trombonist Jimmy Bosch, Bobby Matos (West Coast US percussion legend), and "Mr.Bongo" himself, Jack Costanzo, one time percussionist with people like Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra!

Special guest DJ on the night is Irfan Hussain from Manchester's very hip Rainy City Music label. A music obsessive who loves everything soulful (boogie, nusoul, Brasilian beats, deep house, afrobeat, real hiphop), he has promoted some of the city's best soulful and global clubnights over the last decade (Rainy City, Balanso, Community etc), and featured a host of top DJs at them (Louie Vega, DJ Spinna, Bobbito, Osunlade, Afronaught, Gilles Peterson, Benji B, Jazzanova). A very rare DJ set in the city of Leeds for a true pioneer of soulful beats in the North!

A musical collaboration across three generations brought to you by Red Bull Music Academy, Karen P's Broad Casting and DJ Lubi (Fania Records), in conjunction with The Wardrobe, this will not happen again in the UK! Fania Records was at the heart of this revolution and documented the soundtrack to Latin New York in more than 1500 albums between 1964 and 1989. Fania became to salsa what Motown had been to soul, the hub of the creative talents from a close-knit scene which reached out and was there for a whole generation of music lovers worldwide.

Tonight one of that scene's great innovators, pianist/bandleader Larry Harlow, has put together a team of galacticos to revisit planet salsa from the time when men walked on the moon. A young jazz pianist at the time, Harlow was the first artist to sign to the fledgling label in 1965, and his early releases were a mix of Cuban son and mambo with the cool boogalo of the period. As the 60s progressed into the 70s, he became one of salsa's leading musicians, composing, arranging and producing many albums for the label as well as playing piano in the legendary Fania Allstars.

This concert features several Fania Allstars legends - sonero Adalberto Santiago, timbalero Nicky Marrero and cuatro (Puerto Rican guitar) player Yomo Toro - plus Alegre Allstars trombonist Lewis Kahn and some of New York's current hot-shot musicians including percussionists Louis Bauzo and Bobby Sanabria. Look out especially for one of the new young vocal sensations in New York today, Luisito Rosario!

If you like salsa played the correct way - hot, hard and heavy for the dancefloor but with a jazzy flavour, then this concert is a MUST for you. Brought to you by the same people who promoted the sell-out WILLIE COLON concert at the same venue in the summer.

In support, Radio One's Gilles Peterson, who has been dropping latin gems in the clubs and on radio since the early 80s. Digging deep into his collection and featuring many tracks from his recent Fania DJ Series compilation, expect a few surprises from the station's most progressive presenter!

www.comono.co.uk

for more info.

Must buy!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_saEWcrubCKg/RvJiI7EtzlI/AAAAAAAAAFo/re8PYfmuXCo/s320/ramp.12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5112256432454880850" />
Luv'n'Haight off shoot from Ubiquity records release this GEMM!!! go find in your local record store or if you have to down load it.....

RAMP - The Old One, Two (Luv N'Haight 12'')

'We've got two previously unreleased tracks by legendary 1970s soul act RAMP! For me one of the highlights was Bilal droppping a spoken word peiece from Spike's Mo' Better Blues.
Next The Roots with a once in lifetime performance - normally you see them in the UK doing an album gig - this was the full works plus covers of all time classics (with tuba belting out on stage) and finally rocking out with Led Zep., wow.
AL Green - what a smile, what a catalogue of music.

Saturday:
Raul Midon - amazing voice, he's someone you've got to see live, unbelievable, mimicking a trumpet with his mouth while playing hand picked percussive guitar and singing.
'State of Mind':
State of Mind Video

The Campbell Brothers were an eye-opener - something I just wouldn't see normally, very spiritual. Modern gospel: sacred steel gospel, featuring pedal, and lap steel guitar. Band: Tiffany Godette, Joyce "cinnamon" Jones (vocals); Chuck Campbell (pedal steel); Phil Campbell (electric guitar); Darick Campbell (lap steel); Malcolm Kirby (bass); Carlton Campbell (drums).

Christian Scott - a quality young trumpeter with hip hop influences. Check his album Rewind That.
Christian Scott (trumpet); Matthew Stevens (guitar); David Bryant (piano); Luques Curtis (bass); Marcus Gillmore (drums).

Sunday:
Ornette Coleman - breath-tingling performance.
Band:Ornette Coleman (sax, trumpet, violin); Tony Falanga, Al Macdowell, Charnett Moffett (bass); Denardo Coleman; Dominique Tackenburg.

Ornette Coleman is one of the innovators of the jazz avant-garde. Yet keep harmonies even when taking compositions out there.

Anthony Joseph's spoken word alongside a tight and funky band made a welcoming surprise.
Band: Anthony Joseph (vocals); Colin Webster (flute, alto sax); Andrew John (bass); Paul Brett, Paul Zimmerman (percussion).

Singer performer, writer and poet Anthony Joseph made a name for himself as the voice of a new generation. The Trinidadian born, London based Joseph and his Spasm Band present explosive ‘spoken words’ embedded in Afro-Caribbeantinted jazz, flaunting irresistible poly-rhythms and hypnotizing bass lines. This music can be heard on his album Leggio de Lion that was recently released on the Kindred Spirits label.

Sly & the family Stone - what a legend. It was kinda expected but Sly came out after the band warmed the audience up, after around 20 mins. A hip hop'd out tiny Sly appeared on stage....hoenstly he looked like Snoop been coming to him for tips. He's still got the voice and belted out some beutiful numbers including If you want me to Stay, before sauntering backstage. I'm glad I had the pleasure of hearing his voice in the flesh and i'll remember that, for a long long time.

more pics on way....
